Eww! 5 Home Items You Still Use But Are Probably EXPIRED!
Aside from the no-brainer items that you should replace in your unit, like your toothbrush and other toiletries and kitchen items, there are five more items in your condo you should replace regularly. You use these five items on a daily basis, and sometimes more often than anything else, so learn when you should replace them.
Expired Home Item #1: Carpets
Depending on the quality of the carpet you have and how much foot traffic it receives daily, the frequency of replacing it ranges from one year to 25 years. Typically, a carpet’s lifespan is five to 15 years. However, if you are using the least expensive, apartment-grade, it will last you 1-5 years only. Medium-grade carpets hold out for 5-15 years, while high-end carpets can last 15-25 years.
Aside from age, you should also consider the condition of your carpet. Change it when the fibers are flattened and contorted, it frayed along the edges, faded or discolored, got stained, and stinks.
Expired Home Item #2: Pillow
Although you only sleep on your pillow, it actually needs to be washed and replaced. It harbors debris that are either as tiny as your dandruff or microscopic.
Experts say you should replace your pillow every 2-3 years, but the frequency also varies depending on the material of your pillow and how you take care of it.
Expired Home Item #3: Mattress
Regardless of the type of mattress you have, spring, memory foam, or water, consider replacing it every 5-10 years. The National Sleep Foundation recommends replacing it every eight years, or earlier if you’re around 40 years old and over.
Expired Home Item #4: Sponge
Kitchen sponge is one of the dirtiest items in your home that you need to sanitize or replace regularly. You can sanitize it by wetting it and placing it in the microwave for 30 seconds or throwing it in the dishwasher after every use. It can hold out until about eight weeks if you sanitize it. If you don’t, you should replace it every one to two weeks, or monthly.

Expired Home Item #5: Shower Head
The very thing you use to get yourself cleaned needs to be cleaned and replaced, too. While your shower head doesn’t seem dirty, it actually has a lot of secrets within.
If you don’t want to replace it, you can clean it every week or monthly. However, it’s a must that you thoroughly clean it annually to clear out all the gunk and debris inside it.
